GRAND PORTAGE, MN [August 17, 2015] – There’s a sense of renewed energy in Grand Portage,
Minnesota as the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa begins to completely renovate
and expand the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.
“It’s time. More than 20 years have passed since the original casino was built and we can’t tell you
how excited we are to have a newly renovated facility. The improvements we make to the air quality,
and the opportunity to offer bigger and better centrally located amenities will definitely impress,”
said Brian Mayotte, Enterprise Administrator. “The renovation will not only make an impact to our
curb appeal but ultimately provide our guests with a top notch experience.”
The three-phased renovation plan designed by DSGW Architects of Duluth, Minnesota includes
remodeled guest rooms, a revitalization of the restaurant and lounge, with a new Casino, lobby,
swimming pool, and event center.
Phase one, which is nearing completion, offers resort guests 90 newly renovated rooms and 5 suites.
The new rooms are comfortable and fresh, featuring new furniture, carpet, draperies, light fixtures,
and 42 inch flat screen televisions.
The second phase includes building the grand entrance. The 3-story atrium lobby features expansive
views of Lake Superior and acts as the gateway to guest amenities like a remodeled restaurant and
lounge, new pool and fitness area as well as an outdoor patio. The casino floor, adjacent to the lobby,
will double in size to house up to 600 machines and 4 table games. Lastly, phase three includes a
larger banquet and meeting center which will allow Grand Portage Lodge and Casino to host special
events that seat up to 320 people. The expanded parking lot will allow easy access to the building.
Throughout the facility DSGW Architects utilized design features and finishes to create a fun, open
atmosphere. Dramatic ceiling treatments, colorful decorative floral bead patterns and beautifully
designed custom carpet pay tribute to the Grand Portage culture with a contemporary flair.
“It is an exciting time in Grand Portage! This is a project that will once again make Grand Portage a
first class resort and destination, but will also help to ensure prosperity for the future generations of
Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa,” said Rob Hull, Grand Portage Tribal Councilman.
“Not only will the Lodge and Casino receive an enhancement to the makeup of the property, but the
technology upgrades are a large part of the project as well,” said Frank Vecchio, Marketing Manager.
“It will be a game changing experience for all guests.”
The renovation was carefully planned to happen in phases so the Casino and Lodge can remain
in operation throughout the duration of construction. Kraus Anderson Construction of Duluth,
Minnesota is managing the construction. The entire project will be completed in Spring of 2017.
