There are now more options when it comes to permanent housing for Native American Veterans.

Fond Du Lac tribal leaders said the 10-unit facility couldn’t come at a better time, saying the need for housing was at an all-time high.

Tribal leaders and dozens of community members gathered for the official grand opening of the Fond Du Lac Veterans Supportive Housing project.

The facility houses ten brand new, state-of-the-art units designed to meet the needs of tribal veterans.

Officials say the project, that’s been years in the making, will not only meet the needs of local homeless tribal veterans but Native American veterans across the country.

“They will be safe, they will have a very nice apartment to stay in and we will have staff here to address their needs, it’s a great thing and a great day for Fond Du Lac and a great day for veterans,” said Chuck Smith, Fond du Lac, Veterans Service Officer.

Minnesota 8th District Representative Rick Nolan and Fond du Lac Chairwoman Karen Diver were among those who attended the special event today.

Officials said because demand was so high for this newest facility, tribal leaders are in the early stages of developing another housing project for tribal veterans in need.
