The Spirit Lake Health Center was developed to support a patient-focused healthcare model for the Spirit Lake Community. The clinical and auxiliary departments within this modern facility include administration, business services, behavioral health, dental, primary care, eye care, dialysis, optometry, and laboratory services. Their comprehensive program includes a pharmacy, medical imaging, facility management, physical therapy, chiropractic care, public health nursing, and nutrition, alongside various specialty areas vital to the center’s daily functions. Because this project integrates numerous services previously divided across several locations into a single, unified clinic, a detailed responsibility matrix was established to manage the coordination of medical equipment. By meticulously monitoring which items were being relocated and which new devices required procurement, the team ensured a seamless transition throughout the entire development process.
The interior environment offers a versatile, partitionable community hall equipped with a demonstration kitchen intended for educational programs focused on healthy meal preparation and wellness. The Seven Teachings are woven into the fabric of the interior design, while distinctive floor accents serve as intuitive wayfinding elements to assist patients and visitors as they navigate the building. The exterior architecture incorporates a teepee-inspired theme that welcomes the public while honoring Dakota culture. Buffalo track motifs are integrated into the exterior finishes to pay tribute to the local heritage and the current use of the land, complemented by ribbon patterns on the entrance structure and floral designs rooted in traditional Dakota visual language. The facade is further defined by functional window hoods and additional protective canopies situated around the northern entrances.
Situated on land formerly used as a buffalo pasture within the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota, the facility’s design is a direct reflection of the people it serves. The grounds include a dedicated healing garden and buffalo mounds that show reverence for the history of the site. The exterior layout features private walking trails for staff and a drive-through pharmacy window to enhance convenience for all patients.
The facility features a high-performance building envelope with superior insulation and energy-efficient windows. Beyond a diesel-powered generator, the building is fossil-fuel-free, utilizing a geothermal system for climate control and solar panels to offset its energy consumption.
